What it is

A parallel tax system originally designed to make sure high-income taxpayers pay at least some tax. You calculate your tax two ways and pay the higher amount.

What it really means

Mostly a problem for people with large incentive stock option exercises. Ignore it until you're exercising ISOs — then hire someone.
