The Lifestyle Desk.

Travel, major purchases, practical luxury — the spending decisions where the honest question isn't 'can I afford it,' but 'is it worth it.'

The framework

Four questions before you buy the nice thing.

The point of money is the life it buys you, not the balance it prints. Spending well is a skill. Four questions get most people to the honest answer.

  1. 01

    The Use Rate

How many times will you actually use this in the next year?

Divide the price by the number. That's the real cost per use. Now decide.

  2. 02

    The Diminishing Return

In every category, the curve flattens somewhere.

The tenth percentile to the fiftieth is huge. The fiftieth to the ninetieth is small. The ninetieth to the ninety-ninth is a rounding error you'll feel forever.

  3. 03

    The Alternative

What else would this money buy you, in a form you'd notice?

Not 'invest it and retire six days earlier.' Something real: a trip, a class, a year of something.

  4. 04

    The Regret Test

In five years, will you regret buying it — or not buying it?

Most 'splurges' fail this test in one direction. The good ones fail it in the other.
