What it is

A tax election that lets a business owner split income into a reasonable salary (subject to payroll tax) and distributions (not subject to self-employment tax).

What it really means

Usually starts making sense when net income crosses ~$60–80K. The 'reasonable salary' number is where the IRS lives.
