What it is
IRS rule that says when you convert an IRA, the conversion is proportionally taxed based on all your pre-tax and after-tax IRA balances combined.
What it really means
The reason a backdoor Roth blows up if you have an old rollover IRA sitting around. Roll it into your current 401(k) first — then do the backdoor.
